Subduction of an Oceanic Plateau Across Southcentral Alaska: High?Resolution Seismicity

چکیده

In southcentral Alaska, the Alaska-Aleutian Wadati-Benioff zone (WBZ) shows high seismicity rates west of 147°W. Further east, Wrangell volcanic field (WVF) has some world's largest continental volcanoes but there is equivocal evidence for a WBZ. We deployed dense seismometer array around WVF between 2016 and 2018 used data to increase number detected earthquakes using an autodetection location algorithm. One-dimensional velocity inversion double-difference earthquake further improve locations. Subcrustal form narrow band dipping seismicity—a weak clear WBZ—which strikes parallel trend dips highly oblique plate motion. The WBZ continuous from coast depth 100 km beneath Mount Wrangell. Earthquakes shallower than 40 are two WBZs, indicating continuity subducting Yakutat terrane across region. However, deeper offset by hundreds kilometers, which may indicate slab tear separating Alaska–Aleutian Seismicity differ over 2 orders magnitude separate despite similar incoming plate, with relatively seismically quiescent underlying much more prolific WVF. Higher slab-surface temperatures WVF, due flow edges geometry, lead low within crust, as seen in other warm slabs, abundant water still transported subarc depths mantle wedge.

Subduction of the oceanic Hikurangi Plateau and its impact on the Kermadec arc.

Large igneous province subduction is a rare process on Earth. A modern example is the subduction of the oceanic Hikurangi Plateau beneath the southern Kermadec arc, offshore New Zealand. This segment of the arc has the largest total lava volume erupted and the highest volcano density of the entire Kermadec arc. Here we show that Kermadec arc lavas south of ~32°S have elevated Pb and Sr and low ...

Genetic analysis of Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma) across its North American range: evidence for a contact zone in southcentral Alaska

Contact zones between divergent lineages of aquatic taxa have been described from the northeastern Pacific Ocean. We surveyed samples of Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma) from their North American range for variation at 14 microsatellite DNA loci. After accounting for hybridization between Dolly Varden and co-occurring bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) and Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), we f...

Upper plate stressing and seismicity in the subduction earthquake cycle

We investigate upper plate stressing during the earthquake cycle in a subduction segment, using three-dimensional (3-D) elastic models to address the effects of strongly heterogeneous coupling along strike of the interplate interface. We show how heterogeneity controls the locations and mechanisms of seismicity in the upper plate. Oblique subduction segments, two from the Aleutians (Andreanof I...

Oceanic mafic magmatism in the Siletz terrane, NW North America: Fragments of an Eocene oceanic plateau?

Article history: Received 11 October 2016 Accepted 5 January 2017 Available online 14 January 2017 The Siletz terrane, a predominantly mafic accreted oceanic terrane, is located in the Cascadia forearc region of Oregon, Washington and Vancouver Island. The terrane represents a late Palaeocene–Eocene large igneous province that consists of pillow lavas, massive flows and intrusive sheets. Previo...
